Foundations of Trauma, Resilience and Healing Centered Practices

The Foundations of Trauma, Resilience & Healing-Centered Strategies Training is grounded in the work of the State New Jersey Department of Children and Families and its Office of Resilience. This powerful, research-based training equips professionals, organizations, and community leaders with the knowledge and tools to understand trauma, foster resilience, and create healing-centered environments.

Developed as part of New Jersey’s commitment to becoming a trauma-informed and healing-centered state, this training explores how trauma impacts individuals, families, and communities—and how we can shift from simply managing trauma to actively promoting healing and growth.

What This Training Covers

Participants gain a deep understanding of trauma and practical strategies to apply in real-world settings:

  • Understanding Trauma
    • Types of trauma and lived experiences
    • The neurobiology of trauma and its impact on behavior and development
    • Toxic stress and its effect on individuals and communities
  • Adverse & Positive Childhood Experiences
    • The impact of ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences)
    • The role of PCEs (Positive Childhood Experiences) in healing and prevention
    • Building protective factors that support long-term well-being
  • Resilience & Regulation
    • The science of resilience and protective factors
    • Emotional regulation and co-regulation strategies
    • The “7 C’s of Resilience” framework
  • Healing-Centered Engagement
    • Moving from “What happened to you?” to “What’s strong within you?”
    • Building identity, connection, and community as pathways to healing
    • Creating environments that restore, empower, and uplift
  • Trauma-Informed Practice in Action
    • Applying trauma-informed principles in schools, organizations, and communities
    • Preventing re-traumatization
    • Supporting staff through compassion fatigue and burnout

Training Structure

This training is typically delivered as:

  • Two 4-hour sessions (8 hours total)
  • Interactive, reflective, and discussion-based
  • Designed for real-life application—not just theory

Participants leave with both knowledge and practical tools they can immediately implement in their work.

Who This Training Is For

This training is ideal for:

  • Educators & school staff
  • Youth-serving organizations
  • Nonprofits & community leaders
  • Healthcare & social service providers
  • Coaches, mentors, and facilitators
  • Faith-based and community organizations

Outcomes & Impact

After completing this training, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize how trauma shows up in behavior and relationships
  • Respond with compassion, awareness, and effective strategies
  • Build environments rooted in safety, trust, and connection
  • Strengthen resilience in youth, families, and communities
  • Shift organizational culture toward healing-centered practices

Why This Matters

Trauma impacts more people than we often realize—but so does resilience.

New Jersey’s approach emphasizes that healing happens through relationships, community, and opportunity, not just intervention. This training helps organizations move beyond awareness into action and transformation. (NJ.Gov)
